Where the Sky meets the Earth

Over 40,000 years ago, a prehistoric lake dried into what is now the largest salt flat on the planet, stretching more than 10,000 square kilometers across Bolivia’s altiplano. Its surface holds over 10 billion tons of salt, and beneath it lie the world’s richest reserves of lithium, the “white gold” of the future.

But beyond its geological wonders, Salar de Uyuni is a place of deep cultural and spiritual significance. For the Aymara and Quechua peoples, the salt flat is sacred: a landscape tied to myths of gods, mountains, and ancient lakes.

Local legends speak of the mountains Tunupa, Kusku, and Kusina, whose tears and milk gave birth to the Salar. Even today, rituals like the apacheta (stone offering) and coca leaf blessings are performed here to honor Pachamama, the Earth Mother.

Visiting the Salar is not only about witnessing surreal beauty, it is about stepping into a land where tradition, spirituality, and nature are inseparable.

It is Bolivia’s most iconic landmark, a mirror that reflects both the sky above and the cultural soul of its people.

The image shows a vast white salt flat reflecting the sky above, with scattered clouds and distant mountains in the background.

WET SEASON

Salar de Uyuni transforms into the largest natural mirror on Earth.

A thin sheet of water turns the vast salt flats into a surreal reflection of the sky — creating the illusion of walking on the heavens themselves.

  • Rain Season: November to February (most showers tend to fall at night).

  • Best mirror effect: March to May, when the water lingers and the surface is calm.

It is a season of magic, where horizons dissolve and every step feels infinite.

DRY SEASON

When the rains subside, the flats reveal their otherworldly geometry.

The salt crystallizes into endless hexagonal patterns — natural formations that stretch as far as the eye can see.

  • Best months for pure dry landscapes: June and July.

  • Windier month: August.

This is the season to experience the Salar in its purest, most sculptural form.
